Where to start?? Maltese just love to celebrate and every excuse or opportunity to do a celebration The Maltese people are at the forefront. What can we say? We are a very festive and jolly country.

Carnival, Good Friday, Easter, ‘Imnarja’, St Mary’s feast, 8th September and Christmas. These are dates and events which come at the top of our mind when we think of celebrations in Malta and Gozo because these are some of the most popular around the island. Choose any month of the year and you will find something going on for sure. It is up to you to discover and tag along with the Maltese to enjoy the vibe and celebrate with us.

But it’s Summer so it stands to reason that we shall get you up to speed on what is happening in Summer and just in case you have not booked your holiday yet, here goes some encouragement and reasons to come to our islands.

Picture a village filled with colourful decorations, a spectacle of lights, locals in their best outfits, laughing and cheering with their counter villagers in bars, band music and noisy and bright fireworks and most importantly majestic decorated churches with all their luxuries coupled with their patron procession. Combine all this and you have yourself a typical Maltese Village ‘Festa’

In Summer, between the months of May and September there is a Festa held every week in every village, sometimes more than one in different villages. Each one has a different special character from one another and some are bigger and louder than others making them more popular.

For those Foodies you will enjoy the Festas as food stalls can be found in every street corner selling burgers, hot dogs and any other junk food you can imagine which goes down really good with a Cisk ( local beer ) and spectacular show of fireworks. Or Maybe try some mqaret, typical Maltese sweets (deep fried date cakes). Deliciously sweet and incredibly cheap as well. Other than that you will find also some sellers shouting to sell the artisanal nougat, known as qubbajt in Maltese. Usually sellers have quite a decorative and typical stall as well so keep an eye out!!

Now let’s guide you to some of the important logistics shall we? So, Band marches which march after or along the statue is the highlight of the feats. Local devoted patrons usually walk behind the statue and then the celebration takes quite a loud, dramatic and cheerful twist as the young generation can be seen literally jumping along the favourite village marches and cheering along the way, especially Sunday morning. A must visit!
No, we haven’t forgot the fireworks. A display of colours in the sky, a show which goes on for more than 2 hours and every year is better than the next and better than the neighbouring village. It gets quite competitive and it shows in the dedication and passion as the show is spectacular. The show does not stop there because apart from the fireworks of the night sky there is usually the show of the land fireworks which is as well an elaborate display. Pinwheels that produce dazzling spinning displays of sound and colour.

So there you have it, one major reason to hurry up and book that trip to Malta this Summer!

  • overall Experience: Excellent
